Recent Match Results
After topping Group D in the qualifiers, Turkey fell a bit off. They are currently four games in without a win. Luckily, three of them were friendly matches. They drew against Wales (1:1) and Italy (0:0), but lost to Hungary by 1:0 and were absolutely destroyed against Austria by 6:1.
Key Players
The Turkish team is a mix of experience and youth. Coach Vincenzo Montella has managed to balance the team out really well with goalkeeper Mert Günok and forward Cenk Tosun being some of the oldest members of the team. However, he also helped to incorporate youngsters such as Real’s Arda Güler and Juve’s Kenan Yıldız into his system.
Player Profiles
Hakan Çalhanoğlu is the player to watch. The Turkish captain has had one of the best seasons of his life at Inter Milan. He helps to drive the offence through passing, assists, and goals. Orkun Kökçü will be his partner in the midfield, while goals should be expected out of Galatasaray’s Kerem Aktürkoğlu.
Euro 2024 Schedule
Viewing Turkey’s schedule for the competition, their action starts with a match against Georgia in Group F.
- 18. June: Turkey vs Georgia (BVB Stadion Dortmund, Dortmund)
- 22. June: Turkey vs Portugal (BVB Stadion Dortmund, Dortmund)
- 26. June: Czech Republic vs Turkey (Volksparkstadion, Hamburg)
Latest News
While many people are pushing for Montella to start Arda Güler from the very first match, the Italian coach hasn’t made any indications of whether he will do that or not. Güler is an exceptional talent, but he has had to miss most of the previous season due to injury. Therefore, he might still decide to give other players an advantage and even play the 19-year-old Kenan Yıldız instead, and use Güler as a spark off the bench.
Tactical Analysis
What Montella did when taking off the reigns of the Turkish national side was to revitalise the team. He gave a chance to a lot of young players, which Turkey is filled with at the moment. Montella decided to do away with Çağlar Söyüncü, Cengiz Ünder, and Enes Ünal, all experienced and quality players. He decided to go with players who are more physically fit at the moment and who can perform.
Playing Style and Formation
Turkey usually plays in a 4-2-3-1 formation. They rarely play in a different style, and they do have the players to support that system. Of course, Çalhanoğlu is a massively important piece of the puzzle as he can play both in a traditional midfielder low or join the attack as an attacking midfielder. Turkey’s attacking wingers are also very quick and will put on the pace on their opponents and it is not going to be smart to try and outrun them in a straight race.
Team History
Historically speaking, Turkey has always had a quality squad. But they missed out on a lot of major tournaments, particularly World Cups. Nevertheless, they always had the poise of surprising everyone when it was least expected.
Overview
This will be Turkey’s sixth entry at the Euros. It is the third tournament in a row that they have qualified for, but the previous two ended in the group stages for them. As far as the World Cup goes, they played only two times. The last time was in 2002, when they finished third, marking their greatest footballing success in history.
Achievements and Honors
Turkey’s greatest success have been finishing third at the World Cup 2002 and going to the semi-finals of Euro 2008. They have the strength to surprise even the biggest teams, but they also know how to fumble it all.
European Championship success:
- Semifinals in 2008
World Cup success:
- Third place in 2002
