Serbia Euro 2024: Squad, Schedule, and Latest Updates
Serbia is back at the Euros after a hiatus of 24 years. The last time they played was at Euro 2000 and were one of the most entertaining teams to watch of the tournament. Now, they hope to capture some of the glory of the old days and make it deep into the tournament. However, it remains to be seen whether they are up to the task as on their best day they can win against everyone, but can also lose to complete outsiders as well.
Team Info
This will be the first time Serbia qualified as a sole nation for the Euros. However, they have inherited all the successes from previous incarnations of the country that Serbia was a part of. They aim to write their own story at this tournament and make it at least to the next stage.

Compared to the qualifiers, coach Dragan Stojković has decided to mix things up. The defence is the weakest part of the team, so we will be seeing a few new faces in the back. Roma’s goalkeeper Mile Svilar might be the biggest absentee, with Nemanja Stojić and Petar Ratkov being the biggest surprise additions. Recent Match Results
Serbia’s most recent results are a mixed bag. Their form has fallen off recently, especially in the qualifiers. They won only a single match in their last four games, with losses to Belgium (1:0) and Russia (4:0) in international friendlies. Luckily, they bounced back against Cyprus, also a friendly match, and won by 1:0.
Key Players
Serbia has an experienced squad that has been together for a long time. They do have a few new names this time, but the core of the team has remained the same.
Player Profiles
The best player in the Serbia 2024 Euro squad is definitely their captain and most capped player Dušan Tadić. He has the ability to change the game in an instant, whether it is through exceptional passing or scoring. Even though this may be the last major tournament for him, he still has enough to offer and perhaps get Serbia past the first round.
Alongside him, Serbia’s all-time best scorer, Aleksandar Mitrović will be the man to watch. Mitrović is able to score for fun, especially when it comes to the national side. He is a very strong forward who can play equally well with his feet and head. If any of Serbia’s wingers is able to find him in the box, goals are guaranteed to land.
Euro 2024 Schedule
Serbia’s schedule in Group C starts with the toughest matchup out of all, England.
- 16. June: Serbia vs England (Arena AufSchalke, Gelsenkirchen)
- 20. June: Slovenia vs Serbia (Fußball Arena München, Munich)
- 25. June: Denmark vs Serbia (Fußball Arena München, Munich)
Latest News
One of the two Serbia’s best players made a transition to the Saudi Pro League this season. Aleksandar Mitrović and Sergej Milinković-Savić both joined Al Hilal and were highly successful representing the club. However, this immediately prompted claims that the duo would not be able to perform the same once away from European football.
The duo helped Al Hilla win both the domestic league and cup. Both Mitrović and Milinković-Savić were praised by the media for their contribution as they hope to continue in the same manner during the Euros.
Tactical Analysis
The Serbia Euro 2024 tactics will have to be adapted to their opponents. Coach Dragan Stojković has had a lot of trouble picking players to play in the back. He plays with a back-three formation, like many teams do, but he seems not to be able to find the best pairing of players.
It is a problem that he hasn’t fixed, which we’ve seen in the friendlies, especially in the match against Russia. He tried mixing things up back then, but it only made things worse. It will also be good to see how he decides to play Mitrović and Vlahović. The attacking duo seems to play really well with one another, but Stojković is reluctant to do so when playing against stronger opponents.
Playing Style and Formation
Serbia plays in a modern 3-4-3 formation, or a 3-4-2-1 style. They rotate between playing Sergej Milinković-Savić in the attack or the middle, but it seems that he works best when he plays right in the middle. Tadić usually occupies the attacking midfield role, but he can also contribute from the wing. It will be interesting to see whether Stojković decides to deploy Mitrović and Vlahović or will he go for a more defensive formation.
Team History
This is the first time Serbia plays under this name at the Euros. As Yugoslavia, they played at Euro 2000 last and also had four participations before that. They have inherited all the results from the previous incarnations of the country, which had far more success than Serbia did.
Overview
Historically, no matter the name of the country, Serbia has fared much better at the World Cup than at the European Championships. They played on five Euros before, with this one being their 6th entry. At the World Cup, they appeared 12 times, with four participations during the last five tournaments.
Achievements and Honors
Serbia has never won a major trophy, but they did come close a few times. They finished second at both Euro 1960 and Euro 1968. At the same time, their best rank at the World Cup was fourth place in 1930 and 1960.
European Championship success:
- Runner up 1960, 1976
