Hungary Euro 2024: Squad, Schedule, and Latest Updates

A long time ago, Hungary was the best team in the world. Unfortunately, things have changed from the days of Ferenc Puskás & co. and the Magyars were never able to capitalise on the success of their golden generation. Now, they are back at the very top of the football stage again, with a steady team and their third consecutive appearance at the Euros.

Recent Match Results

Hungary haven’t lost a game spanning 14 games now. The last time they lost was in the Nations League versus Italy by 2:0. They finished the qualifiers without a loss, with the latest game being a 3:1 win against Montenegro. They also defeated Turkey by 1:0 and Kosovo by 2:0 in friendly games.

Key Players

Marco Rossi probably has one of the hardest-working group of people in his squad. The Hungary 2024 Hungary team is not made out of stars as other teams are. They have some very experienced players on their side who have played with each other for a long period of time.

Player Profiles

The key figure in Marco Rossi is the captain Dominik Szoboszlai. The Liverpool midfielder is only 23 years old. But after making a successful transition from the Bundesliga to the Premier League, he showed just how much potential he has. His thunderous strikes from out far as well as his playmaking ability are key factors for his team.

In the back, Willi Orbán reigns supreme. The RB Leipzig defender is one of the best central backs in the Bundesliga. His strudiness in defence fuels the entire team, especially the back line.

Euro 2024 Schedule

The Hungary schedule tips them against Switzerland in the opening game of Group A.

Latest News

As things currently stand, Denes Dibusz will keep his first goalkeeper status during the Euros. After Peter Gulacsi sustained an injury that kept him off the field for a significant time, Ferencvaros’ Dibusz stepped in and filled his shoes more than well. Coach Marco Rossi feels confident that he will be able to continue with the same form during the Euros.

Tactical Analysis

Hungary has been a defend first score second team for some time now. However, it seems that with better results came better efficiency in the attack. They are able to utilise the counterattack well with Szoboszlai managing to hold the midfield more than well. Hungary’s captain also plays a more offensive role for his home country compared to Liverpool, allowing him to get on the score sheet quite often.

Playing Style and Formation

Coach Marco Rossi utilises a 3-4-2-1 formation. The wingers, usually consisting of Zsolt Nagy and Bendegúz Bolla, fulfil that role exceptionally well as they are able to add to the offence of the team. Szoboszlai transitions into an offensively attacking role, something that he played more in RB Leipzig, through which he can either score or feed the lone attacker in front of him.

Team History

Not a lot of people remember the good old days of Hungarian football. Right until the 70s the Magyars were a team that everyone feared,  but feel off since then and have been pining for a chance to get back at the top.

Overview

Hungary is often viewed as the best team in the world that never won anything. They had a golden generation of plates, led by the Ferenc Puskás, a Ferencvaros and Real Madrid legend. Unfortunately, they were not able to capture the success that the team had and win any trophies, leaving them without any real medals.

Achievements and Honors

Hungary had much better results at the World Cup than at the Euros. At least in the past. They have played nine times at the World Cup and reached the finals twice. However, they haven’t qualified since 1986 when they finished the competition in the group stage.

On the other hand, they only appeared at the Euros four times. This will be their fifth appearance, but third straight. They finished third in 1964, marking their greatest achievement at the European Championship.

European Championship:

  • Third place 1964

World Cup:

  • Second place 1938, 1954
