Scott Thornton brings you his Freiburg vs RB Leipzig prediction preview with both teams vying for a European place in the Bundesliga.

Freiburg are 5th in the table, two points above Saturday’s opponents heading into the weekend. They are just a point behind fourth place so Champions League qualification is a real possibility, particularly if they earn a huge win over RB Leipzig.

Marco Rose’s side have struggled for consistency of late. They haven’t won back-to-back league games since December, which doesn’t bode well as we get into the business end of the season.

Freiburg vs RB Leipzig Prediction: Goals Galore When These Teams Square Off

Germany, Bundesliga, Saturday, March 8th, 17:30 (UK)

Since losing to Bayern Munich on January 25th, Freiburg have gone five matches unbeaten in the Bundesliga. They have kept a clean sheet in all five of those games but we are backing their defence to come unstuck when they face a very capable RB Leipzig side.

This is a must-win game for the visitors. Champions League qualification is a minimum expectation at Leipzig. Failure to climb into the top four would see pressure build on Marco Rose. The manager knows his team must deliver here after succumbing to a 2-1 defeat at home to Mainz last weekend.

Despite their struggles, RB Leipzig have still managed to score an average of 1.75 goals per league game this season. However, they are also conceding 1.38 goals on average, making their games ideal candidates for both teams to score bettors. The Red Bulls have the sixth-highest xGA (expected goals) in the Bundesliga with 43.16 and will struggle to keep their opponents out here.

Freiburg have scored an average of 2.18 goals per home game this season, failing to score in just two of their 11 league games at the Europa-Park Stadion. They are also conceded an average of 1.18 goals in front of their own fans. Julian Schuster’s side have kept clean sheets in their last two home games against Werder Bremen and Heidenheim but RB Leipzig pose a much greater attacking threat.

Leipzig haven’t lost any of their last 12 matches against Freiburg, a run that dates back to 2019. The recent head-to-head data also suggests we should see goals. Both teams have scored in eight of the last nine meetings between the sides with those games seeing an average of 3.33 goals. BETSiE is also projecting that both teams will score in the match.

Freiburg vs Leipzig Injuries, Team News and Possible Lineups Prediction: Unchanged Team for Freiburg

Julian Schuster isn’t one to make changes. He has named the same starting 11 in Freiburg’s last three matches. That will undoubtedly change should they qualify for Europe next season but squad rotation can wait for now. Danie-Kofi Kyereh and Bruno Ogbus are both out with ACL injuries. Florent Muslija and Manuel Guede are also ruled out.

Marco Rose should look to start Lois Openda and Benjamin Sesko as a deadly strike pairing. Benjamin Henrichs, Xaver Schlager and Antonio Nusa will all miss due to injury. Yussuf Poulsen’s involvement is also in doubt.

Freiburg possible starting lineup:
Atubolu; Sildillia, Lienhart, ginter, Gunter; Osterhage, Eggestein, Rohl; Doan, Grifo, Holer.

RB Leipzig possible starting lineup:
Gulacsi; Orban, Geertruida, Lukeba; Baku, Vermeeren, Kampl, Raum; Simons, Openda, Sesko
