Salzburg v Eintracht Frankfurt Prediction

It hasn’t been a kind second half of the season for Salzburg. They’ve lost two of their three competitive matches so far with a 3-0 win over second-division SKU Amstetten in the OFB Stiegl Cup, their sole competitive win in 2020. For Frankfurt, it’s been a different story. They’ve lost just one of their seven competitive fixtures this year in a run that has included two wins over RB Leipzig.

Salzburg v Eintracht Frankfurt Recent Matchups

The first leg match was the first fixture between Salzburg and Eintracht Frankfurt. It’s fair to say that it was a bit of a mismatch after that 4-1 hammering. Frankfurt’s Japanese midfielder Daichi Kamada grabbed three of the four goals to take his Europa League tally to six in his last three matches.

Salzburg v Eintracht Frankfurt Stats & Analysis

Salzburg will be hoping that home advantage will see them through in this second leg match. The Austrian side have a comparatively impressive home record in Europe’s second competition compared to their away performance. They have won 12 of their last 14 home matches in the Europa League and they even drew the other two.

The thing that is most impressive about that incredible 14-game run is the defensive performance of Salzburg. The Austrian side have conceded just five goals in that 14-game run and have never let in more than one goal in a game.

By comparison, Eintracht Frankfurt aren’t the best travellers in this competition. They’ve lost four of their last eight Europa League away matches. They won the other four but the stats are somewhat padded by victories over the Estonian side FC Flora and FC Vaduz of Lichtenstein. Looking at the wider picture and Frankfurt have struggled on the road. They’ve lost 10 of their last 16 away matches in all competitions, the most recent of which was that 4-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund last week.

Normally, the pendulum would be swinging in Salzburg’s favour given that home record but the result in the first leg will put a stop to that. History suggests that Salzburg has a decent chance of winning this second leg but the aggregate scoreline implies that it won’t be enough for them to progress.

Salzburg v Eintracht Frankfurt Bets

Salzburg are the favourites to win this match in the 90 minutes. It’s a different story when it comes to progression but for the match itself, you’ll get odds of 10/11 for the Austrian side to come out on top here. Eintracht Frankfurt dominated the first leg but are just 10/3 to secure another win in this one. A draw is out at 10/3 as well so Salzburg clearly has the backing of the bookies.

Given their incredible home record in Europe, it’s easy to see why. It’s built on defensive stability and their habit of keeping clean sheets while still getting something at the other end. Salzburg to win to nil is a tempting 3/1 if you fancy the Austrian side to come out on top in the 90 minutes played here.

The away goal will give them a sliver of hope. Salzburg manager Jesse Marsch will know that a 3-0 win will take his side through here. You’ll get odds of 17/1 for the Austrian side to complete their fairytale comeback and secure that 3-0 victory. It wouldn’t be impossible, they have scored 3+ goals in four of their last five home matches in the Europa League.

Another argument in favour of the comeback is just how many goals Salzburg concede on the road. They’ve kept just one clean sheet in their 17 competitive away matches in all competitions but they have scored in 13 of them. Both teams to score is likely at 8/15.
