Our resident Brighton fan is here with his Southampton vs Brighton prediction preview. The Saints have struggled this season, picking up just nine points – one of them coming against Saturday’s visitors. Ivan Juric will take solace in the Seagulls struggles against lowly opposition, but will be well aware of his sides torrid recent record against Brighton, failing to win any of the last six meetings.
Brighton have looked better when conceding possession, with the pace and power of Kaoru Mitoma, Yankuba Minteh and Georginio Rutter excelling on the counter attack. This should lead to an interesting dynamic, with Juric preferring his team to be compact and hard to beat.
England, Premier League, Saturday , February 22nd, 15:00 (UK)
The two sides had contrasting FA Cup results and subsequent Premier League results. The Saints lost 0-1 at home to Championship Burnley in a drab affair before losing 1-3 at home to Bournemouth. The Seagulls completed the double scalp of Chelsea, beating The Blues 2-1 in the cup, before dismantling them 3-0 in a dominant league display.
The Saints have just two Premier League wins to their name and nine points, beating only Everton at home and fellow strugglers Ipswich away. Cut ten points adrift, relegation looks inevitable and focus must start soon on squad building for a season in the Championship.
After Russell Martin was dismissed, it was hoped the passionate Ivan Juric would inspire some fight into a lackluster squad devoid of any confidence. However, The Croat has struggled in his tenure so far, losing eight of his ten games, with his two victories coming in the cup against Swansea and in the league against Ipswich.
One of their nine points this season came in the reverse fixture – a 1-1 draw in November in a game the Seagulls dominated but couldn’t find the cutting edge. This result would’ve frustrated Fabian Hurzeler whose side notoriously struggle against those lower in the league, also drawing at home to Ipswich and Brentford, losing at home to Everton and drawing away to Wolves and Leicester. Saturday is the sort of game Brighton must win if they are to realise their European ambitions.
One player who has been key to both victories in recent weeks is Yankuba Minteh. Signed for £30m from Newcastle who had to sell to ease PSR concerns, the 20-year-old has become a real fan favourite and looks to be undroppable. The Gambian has been deployed as a wing-back, with his pace and tenacity a real asset out of possession.
In possession, he is electric and unpredictable, turning Marc Cucurella inside-out for his brace on Friday night. His composure and maturity has also impressed, showing real calmness in front of goals for all of strikes. He is averaging 0.49 goals per 90 and looks a big price to continue his rich vein of form on Saturday.
Southampton vs Brighton Prediction odds via bet365 as at 12:00, February 18th, 2025. Odds may now differ.
After back-to-back wins, Brighton’s team almost picks itself as Fabian Hurzeler is finally figuring out his best side after being riddled with injuries all season. The German made one change from the 7-0 drubbing at Nottingham Forest, with Carlos Baleba returning in place of Joao Pedro. The second game against Chelsea saw just one change too, with Adam Webster replacing the injured Lewis Dunk. Dunk is 50-50 for this game, so Hurzeler is facing a big decision on whether or not to restore his captain after Webster’s fine display last time out.
On the injury front, Ferdi Kadioglu, Igor Julio, James Milner, Jason Steele, Pervis Estupinan and Solly March remain out, while Lewis Dunk and Mats Wieffer have a chance to feature.
Adam Lallana looks set to miss out on a Brighton reunion as he is out with a hamstring injury. Flynn Downes, Jack Stephens, Ross Stewart, Ryan Fraser and Taylor Harwood-Bellis are also absent. Juric has lined up with a back three in recent weeks, but ditched it at half time against Bournemouth so it remains to be seen how his side set up for the visit of fellow South-Coasters Brighton.
