USA vs Bolivia Prediction: Copa America Team News and Lineups Preview
USA vs Bolivia Prediction 1: USA Must Make a Fast Start
The United States are not a member of CONMEBOL but this tournament will be the fifth time they have been invited to play in the Copa America. They are sixth favourites in the betting to lift the trophy, with Argentina and Brazil leading the way. The USA suffered a 5-1 defeat against Colombia on June 8th, the side that are just above them in the betting. The woeful display set alarm bells ringing and they still have a friendly against Brazil to come.
Despite the setback, the US are expected to beat Bolivia with ease. They have the advantage of being the host nation, ahead of North America’s chance at hosting the World Cup in two years time. The last time these two sides squared off was in 2018, the United States ran out 3-0 victors in that match and we are backing them to cover the handicap once again.
Gregg Berhalter’s team have faltered in recent matches. They have just one win in their five matches prior to the clash with Brazil. USA need to improve if they are to reach the knockout stages of the competition but their chances are helped by the lack of quality in their group. Uruguay are more fancied than the United States but Panama and Bolivia are relative minnows.
Bolivia have been on a wretched run in competitive matches. They have picked up just one win in their last 10 games. Over that period, they are conceding an average of 2.8 goals. That’s 2.1 more per game than they have scored so the Asian handicap of -1.5/2 for the USA looks a solid bet here.

USA vs Bolivia Prediction 2: Bolivians Have Nothing to Lose
While we expect to Bolivia to come up well short against the hosts, they could have some success going forward. Defensive issues have plagued Berhalter’s side in recent matches so keeping a clean sheet could prove to be a difficult task.
The USA managed to have more possession than their opponents in their recent clash with Colombia but were carved open on numerous occasions. Nestor Lorenzo’s team were able to create seven big chances in the match and scored from five of their six shots on target.
Under Gregg Berhalter, the focus has been on closing the gap on the top four sides in this competition. However, they are yet to beat a side ranked in the top 20 outside of CONCACAF. The focus is on the USA in the next couple of years with World Cup excitement levels expected to reach fever pitch. The pressure could be telling in this opening fixture.
Bolivia don’t have the same attacking quality as Colombia but a weak USA defence gives them hope. Berhalter’s side have conceded in four of their last five matches (the Brazil game is still to come) and their opponents are averaging 1.8 goals in that period. The Stars and Stripes conceded one against Jamaica and two against Trinidad and Tobago in that time frame.
Antonio Carlos Zago knows his side will likely need a result in their opening match if they are to harbour any ambitions of finishing in the top two and making it to the knockout stages. Bolivia managed to score in their opening game of the 2021 edition of the Copa America. They went on to lose that match 3-1 against Paraguay.
