Bayern Munich assumes the role of host at the Allianz Arena on Friday evening as Vincent Kompany’s league leaders aim to make eight points clear in this Bayern Munich vs Augsburg prediction betting preview. Many questioned the Belgian’s appointment after the Bavarians’ arduous hunt in finding a new manager, but they might have stumbled upon the right man.
Since Bayern Munich lost to Aston Villa and Barcelona in the Champions League in consecutive rounds, they’ve performed impeccably with five consecutive wins, all shutting out their opponents to nil. In order to starve the press wildfire from spreading after the Barca defeat, this dominant run was exactly what was needed to see it all but extinguished.
Bayern president Herbert Hainer has publicly backed the Belgian Head Coach after this streak of victories, saying, “Our team is giving us great joy, Vincent Kompany is doing an excellent job. We have been playing exciting football since the start of the season, and we have now won all of our last five games without conceding a goal. This shows that Vincent is constantly developing our team.”
At first glance at Augsburg’s fixtures, it’s evident that many of their games are goal-laden, especially at home. On the road, though, it’s a different story; Augsburg have played four games and only have one point to show for it. Put simply, Augsburg are not very good away from the WWK Arena. Two of their three defeats were 4-0 drubbings to RB Leipzig and Heidenheim.
This fixture should follow a similar pattern to their two biggest defeats of the season. In both of those, they conceded around 3.0xG, and it’s difficult envisaging them traveling to Munich and limiting the Bayern attack.
Defensively, Bayern’s run of clean sheets is almost as impressive as what’s going on at the other end. It’s not something many would have applied to a backline with Upemecano and Kim Min-Jae at the heart of it considering last season’s form, but they have improved in recent weeks. As a unit and individually they looked poor in fixtures against Frankfurt and Aston Villa nearer the start of the season. The tide has turned; the display Bayern put in against St. Pauli has to be commended. Kim Min-Jae, in particular, showed flashes of the form that earned him this move from Napoli. The Korean defender completed 113 out of 113 passes, all while winning 78% of his nine duels for the ball, including all six on the ground.
Restricting opposition chances has been a massive factor in Bayern’s recent flawless five matches; if you can suffocate a side so much that they don’t have a chance to shoot, they won’t score. This is exactly what Bayern are doing right now under Kompany; they have faced an average of just 5.7 shots per90 in the Bundesliga this season. That’s the second-best in the league behind Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund (10.3 per90), both allowing opponents almost twice as many.
Defensively, Bayern Munich have shown they have more than enough to contain Augsburg.
