Serie A’s match of the weekend comes on Sunday night and our Italian football expert Daniele Fisichella has prepared the preview for Juventus vs Atalanta.

With five consecutive victories under their belt and the top three slowing down, the Old Lady finds herself just six points shy of the summit.

This game against Atalanta offers Thiago Motta’s team a golden opportunity to draw level with La Dea in third place and continue to dream about Scudetto.

Juventus vs Atalanta  Prediction: Only a win can keep Scudetto dreams alive

Italy, Serie A, Sunday, March 9th, 19:45 (UK)

Juventus are navigating a season full of contradictions. Despite some fans calling for Thiago Motta’s dismissal after their Champions League and Coppa Italia exits, the team has climbed to fourth place in Serie A, just six points behind Inter Milan.

The visitors, meanwhile, are searching for answers following three consecutive home draws against Torino, Cagliari, and Venezia. They have not secured a home victory since the end of last year, and manager Gian Piero Gasperini’s comments about potentially leaving Bergamo this summer have added to the uncertainty.

Juventus, while pursuing Champions League qualification, are now daring to dream of a remarkable title challenge.

With Inter projected by BETSiE to top the league with just 81.4 points—13 fewer than last season—the Bianconeri have reason to believe. At least until Sunday night, when Atalanta, who currently have only a 6.3% chance of lifting the Scudetto according to our in-house tool, might also feel the title battle is far from over.

A defensive resurgence has been key to Juventus’s form, with their 14th clean sheet of the season coming against Verona, making them the Serie A leaders in goals conceded.

They have let in just 21 goals—one fewer than Napoli. This defensive solidity hasn’t been evident for 13 games, not since Ante Rebic’s last-minute equaliser at Lecce that marked Juve as the top defensive side with seven goals conceded compared to Antonio Conte’s nine.

The team then went through a rough patch, conceding at least once in six consecutive matches against Bologna, Venezia, Monza, Fiorentina, Torino, and Atalanta. Injuries and a lack of options seemed to have compromised their defensive fortress from earlier in the season.

However, slowly and surely, through creative tactics like deploying Weah at full-back, new acquisitions such as Renato Veiga and Kelly, the dependability of Gatti, and recoveries from injury like Cambiaso, Motta has meticulously rebuilt his defensive line. Juventus have now achieved back-to-back Serie A clean sheets for the first time since early November, having kept Cagliari and Verona at bay.

The ultimate test for Motta’s back-four

Along with Inter, Juventus have conceded just five goals in their last eight games, establishing them as the league’s defensive stalwarts in the second half of the season. On a continental level, they lead Europe in domestic clean sheets, surpassing Atletico Madrid’s 13.

The real test looms this Sunday against Atalanta, who boast Serie A’s second-best attack, with an average of 2.19 goals per match and 2.14 in away fixtures. The 1-1 draw earlier in the season provided encouraging signs, with Juventus delivering nine shots on target to Atalanta’s six and effectively countering La Dea’s aggressive strategy.

Though history might favour the hosts—Atalanta have not defeated Juventus since November 2021—Gasperini’s team has a reputation for performing well on the road.

With BETSiE anticipating a slight goal difference of 0.23 in Juventus’s favour and a total of just 2.23 goals for the game, betting on Under 2.5 Goals appears to be a smart choice.

Juventus vs Atalanta Injuries, Team News and Possible Lineups Prediction: La Dea’s top strikers both set to start

Motta faces a selection headache with the absence of injured Conceicao, who joins Veiga, Savona, and Douglas Luiz on the sidelines.

However, there is good news as Kalulu is back in contention for a starting spot at the heart of the defence.

In midfield, Thuram is set to start alongside Locatelli, while McKennie could take on the attacking midfield role, with Koopmeiners likely to replace him later in the match. Yildiz and Gonzalez will support Kolo Muani up front.

Gasperini is expected to stick with his preferred front three, with Lookman and De Ketelaere behind Retegui. Samardzic and Maldini are on standby to provide additional firepower if needed.

On the right flank, Bellanova might be preferred to Cuadrado, while Zappacosta will retain his place on the left. Defender Hien has recovered from injury and will be on the bench.

Juventus possible starting lineup:
Di Gregorio; Weah, Kalulu, Gatti, Cambiaso; Locatelli, K. Thuram; Yildiz, McKennie, N. Gonzalez; Kolo Muani.

Atalanta possible starting lineup:
Carnesecchi; Posch, Djimsiti, Kolasinac; Bellanova, De Roon, Ederson, Zappacosta; De Ketelaere, Lookman; Retegui.
