Angers vs Marseille Prediction: OM to maintain strong road form
France Ligue 1, Sunday 9th February, 19:45 (UK)
Marseille have the joint best away record in Ligue 1 alongside PSG. They can’t always be trusted at the Stade Velodrome but would’ve been delighted to beat Lyon 3-2 there last week which was a morale boosting win and performance facing a big rival. It’s their road form which has Marseille in second place though where they are perfectly set up to thrive. They have pace and skill options in abundance and players who are capable of scoring low xG goals from potentially outside the penalty area. OM are improving their offensive metrics as the season progresses though and have now scored the second most goals in the league (43) from an xG of 38.57 which ranks third.
The Mediterranean giants travel to an Angers side who have certainly enjoyed a major rebound in the last couple of months. In the early stages of the season they looked nailed on for relegation but have steadily improved to such a position where they will fancy themselves to avoid the drop. Angers produced a Coupe de France shock in midweek when they beat Strasbourg 3-1 away from home but that match might have taken something out of their tank and they are up against a Marseille side who have sole focus on Ligue 1 matters. Angers could only draw 1-1 vs Le Havre in their most recent home match, although prior to that they did beat Auxerre here 2-0. They’ve tended to struggle vs the bigger teams this season with home defeats to Lens, Nice, PSG, and Lyon and this looks like a good spot for Marseille to come and beat them. OM should show their quality and will most likely win with plenty to spare. In this instance simply taking Marseille to win on the nose at 1.61 looks like the best bet and a strong selection. There is no need to over-complicate the bet and backing the visitors to prevail feels a wise option.

Angers vs Marseille Injuries, Team News and Possible Lineups Prediction: Gouiri staking claim for Marseille
Lilian Rao-Lisoa had his red card rescinded so will be available for selection. However, he started the midweek Coupe de France so Abdoulaye Bamba might get the spot in the XI. Fofana will return in goal whilst in-form striker Esteban Lepaul remains upfront in a likely 4-2-3-1 formation.
Marseille could keep a similar XI to the one which beat Lyon last weekend. However, in that game new winter signing Amine Gouiri made a huge difference off the bench. He should get the start in this instance alongside Luis Henrique and Mason Greenwood in attack. For the last two months head coach Roberto De Zerbi has been using a 3-4-2-1 formation so that is unlikely to change.
Angers possible starting lineup:
Fofana, Hanin, Lefort, Biumla, Bamba, Belkebla, Ahoulou, El Melali, Abdelli, Allevinah, Lepaul
Marseille possible starting lineup:
Rulli, Cornelius, Balerdi, Murillo, Merlin, Hojbjerg, Rongier, Luis Henrique, Rabiot, Gouiri, Greenwood
Match Stats: Marseille dominating on the road
- Marseille have the joint best away record in Ligue 1 with 8 wins out of 10 and 24 points
- Only PSG have scored more goals (43) than Marseille and only Monaco and PSG have a higher xG.
- Both sides are well disciplined and rank in the bottom five for cards obtained. Only PSG have a cleaner card record than Angers.
- Marseille average 62.1% possession, the second most of any team. Angers only average 42.7% of the ball this season.
- Marseille average the second fewest tackles per game (16.70) of any team this season
