Basketball World Championship 2023
We have already witnessed seeing the tournament held in Asia, China to be exact last year. But this time, the World Basketball Championship will be held in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, respectively.
Spain will be defending their title and will be looking to become a nation that holds both the World and the European championship title at the same time. But on their way are the USA, Serbia, France, Greece, and many other countries, which will be wanting to dethrone the Spaniards and capture the title for themselves.
Basketball Championship Predictions
The World Basketball Championship will take place from 25 August to 10 September. The Basketball World Championship qualifications ended a while ago and the final phase of the tournament, as well as the final itself, is set to take place in the Philippines, namely at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
The format of the competition will not change compared to the one utilised in the previous competition. The teams will be separated into eight groups of four, out of which the top two will advance to the second stage of the tournament. Four new groups with four participants will be formed, with two top teams advancing to the elimination stage.
The final round starts with the quarterfinals and continues all the way to the final game when we will see the champion crowned. There are going to be five host cities for the entire tournament, three in the Philippines (Bocaue, Quezon City, and Pasay) and a single one in Japan (Okinawa) and Indonesia (Jakarta).
The singular format of the 2023 World Basketball Championship leaves a lot of room for punters. There are going to be a lot of fabulous games that fans are going to enjoy both watching and wager on. Not only that, but individual performers are something that people always look for.
Past competitions have always managed to create new stars that emerge on the big stage. Even though the World Basketball Championship will be riddled with NBA stars, players from all kinds of regions and leagues do emerge. We often get to see players from Europa, Africa and even Latin America leave their hearts on the court in an attempt of their team advancing forward.
Basketball World Championship Groups
This is going to be the second time that the World Basketball Championship will feature 32 nations. The format will see eight groups with four teams, where the top two from each group will advance to the next round.
Group A | Group B | Group C | Group D |
Angola | South Sudan | USA | Egypt |
Dominican Republic | Serbia | Jordan | Mexico |
Philippines | China | Greece | Montenegro |
Italy | Puerto Rico | New Zealand | Lithuania |
Group E | Group F | Group G | Group H |
Germany | Slovenia | Iran | Canada |
Finland | Cape Verde | Spain | Latvia |
Australia | Georgia | Ivory Coast | Lebanon |
Japan | Venezuela | Brazil | France |
Latvia, South Sudan, Georgia, and Cape Verde will be appearing at the competition for the first time in their history. Cape Verde, led by one of Euroleague’s best players Edy Tavares, became the smallest nation to compete at the basketball tournament.
Top National Teams in Basketball
While the World Basketball Championship features excellent nations from all over the world, the European teams are the ones that are considered the best. Of course, we can’t count out the US team, which are considered as one of the best teams in the world.
Spain has only won the tournament twice, but are seen as the best team on the world’s list. Some of their stars may be getting a bit long in the tooth, but the Spaniards always find a way to be contenders. They showed that in the previous European Championship, which they won by featuring a younger roster coupled with experienced veterans.
Serbia is also one of the favourites. They will be coming to the tournament to finally lift the trophy after coming close in 2014 and 2010. They have Nikola Jokic in their ranks, one of the best players and centres in the NBA that won the title this season.
The USA team will feature a full NBA roster. But that approach was not successful in the previous World Basketball Championship. Steve Kerr will be leading the national team for the first time. But while he plans to bring many NBA stars to the tournament, he is still not going to have the very best. Nevertheless, whatever incarnation of the Dream Team we get to see at the 2023 World Basketball Championship, they are going to be the main contenders.
As far as other teams go, France will be gunning for the final after finishing as third two times in a row. Slovenia, led by Luka Doncic, will be the dark horse of the competition, as well as Canada, which may come with a full NBA roster as well.
Basketball World Championship Top Players
The 2023 World Basketball Championship will feature a plethora of star players. Besides a slew of NBA talent, we will be getting a number of players from the Euroleague as well as other corners of the world.
The most notable NBA players are definitely Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, and Luka Doncic. Giannis hopes to grab a major piece of silverware with Greece finally. With an early exit from the NBA playoffs, he should be physically ready for this tournament. The same thing goes for Luka Doncic. After taking the European title with Slovenia, Luka hopes to add a trophy for his country from the world stage. Finally, Nikola Jokic is the biggest hope for the Serbian national team as he is touted as the player who should bring them their old glory.
The Spaniards’ duo of Sergio Llull and Rudy Fernandez will once again try to rally the troops and push La Roya to yet another trophy. Rudy Gobert will try to do the same, as he has been a major force for his team in past competitions. It would also be interesting to finally see Shai Gilgeous-Alexander compete for Team Canada at the most prestigious tournament yet.
Players expected to make a buzz at the World Basketball Championship are Jordan Clarkson (Philippines), Franz Wagner (Germany), Kristaps Porzingis (Latvia), and Edy Tavares (Cape Verde).
