The NBL has showcased many talented players, with some achieving success in international leagues. Andrew Gaze is considered a legend, holding the record for most career points in the NBL with 18,908. He played 612 games over 22 seasons, averaging 30.9 points per game. Gaze also had seven of the top ten single-season scoring averages, including a record 44.1 points per game in 1987. He was named the league’s Most Valuable Player seven times 36. Known for his exceptional shooting, Gaze led the Melbourne Tigers to two championships in 1993 and 1997 4. He also recorded 3,531 assists during his career.

Other notable players include Leroy Loggins, who ranks second in career points with 13,106 2. Shane Heal is also a major name, known for his offensive skills and scoring 61 points in a single game. Al Green holds the record for most points in a single game, scoring 71 in 1984. Gaze himself scored 59 points in a game against Illawarra in 1991 7. These athletes have contributed significantly to the league’s history. The NBL continues to feature current stars who are making their mark, keeping the level of play high.

NBL Format

The NBL season typically runs from October to February, with the finals extending into March. Each team plays 28 games in the regular season, with 14 games at home and 14 away. The regular season concludes in mid-February. In the 2020-21 season, teams played 36 games due to the NBL Cup, but the league returned to 28 games in subsequent seasons.

The regular season consists of 140 games spread across 20 rounds, starting in late September or early October and concluding in mid-February. Each team plays 28 games, split evenly between home and away matches. In the past, the season length varied; for example, in 2020/21, teams played 36 games due to the NBL Cup, but the standard 28-game schedule was reinstated.

The top four teams at the end of the regular season advance to the Finals. The first and second-placed teams receive home-court advantage in their best-of-three semi-final series against the third and fourth-placed teams. The winners of these semi-final series progress to the Grand Final, which is a best-of-five series, where the higher remaining seed gets home advantage. The winner of the Grand Final series is crowned the NBL champion. Since the 2022-23 season, a play-in tournament has been added, involving teams ranked third to sixth. The third seed plays the fourth seed, and the loser plays the winner of the fifth vs sixth seed to determine the final two semi-final spots.
