UFC 249: Uriah Hall vs Ronaldo Souza prediction, picks, betting tips
Uriah Hall vs Jacare Souza goes down on April 19th, UFC 249. This fight takes place in the middleweight division. What can we expect from Uriah Hall?
The matchup
You never know which Uriah Hall you get; sometimes he delivers one of the most incredible knockouts and other times he doesn’t quite seem to show up. With that being said, Hall seems to have found his rhythm as of late, as he is riding on a two-fight win streak against decent competition. Hall is a great finisher and has finished 73% (11) of his 15 wins by knockout.
Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza is a true UFC veteran. At 40 years of age, he’s had 27 fights in the UFC and has won 19 of them. Souza has faced some of the best in the division such as Yoel Romero, Hermansson, Gastelum, and Blachowicz. Perhaps it’s safe to say that Hall won’t bring anything to the table that Souza hasn’t seen before.
Souza seems to be approaching the end of his career. He has lost 3 of his last 5 and is currently on a two-fight losing streak, something the veteran has never been before in his career. However, the age advantage isn’t huge for Hall, who is 5 years younger. Souza also has more ways to win, and we never know if Hall is going to show up or not.
Prediction
Despite Souza’s age, there is reason to believe he still has what it takes to beat a guy like Uriah Hall. Souza might be coming off a loss, however, that loss was a narrow split decision to Jan Blachowicz where he could’ve gotten the nod. Looking at Hall, he hasn’t fared well against top-level competition like Souza. He’s lost to Whittaker, Brunson, Mousasi, Gastelum, and Paulo Costa. His most notable win has come against Gegard Mousasi where he managed to score what many would deem a lucky shot to put Mousasi down. The most important factor in this fight will be the takedown defense of Uriah Hall. Souza will likely try to get the fight to the ground to submit his opponent. If Hall can stop that from happening and keep the fight standing, he has the best chance of winning.
Prediction: Ronaldo Souza.
Betting tips
Who is the valued pick?
Due to the unpredictability of Uriah Hall and the age of Souza, there are so many ways this fight could play out. Lacking confidence in your pick for a fight often means you should pass on that fight. Gun to the head, we say Souza probably wins this one on the judges’ scorecards. The inconsistency of Uriah Hall is too great to make him worth a punt.
Betting tip: Ronaldo Souza.
Prop bets with value
Like we stated for our Esparza-Waterson preview, the general trend in the UFC that we are seeing, is that more than 50% of fights are going the distance. Uriah Hall tends to shell up when he faces a lot of adversity and stay defensive and behind his guard. Meanwhile he isn’t easy to finish, so it will be tricky for Souza if we wants to get it done inside the distance.
Prop bet betting tip: The fight goes the distance.
How have the odds changed?
When the line initially opened Ronaldo Souza was the reasonable favorite around 1.71. However, money has been coming in on Uriah Hall which has now made his odds drop from about 2.10 to 2.00 while elevating odds for the favorite to about 1.80. If you feel like Uriah Hall is going to win, the boat might have sailed on that one, but Ronaldo Souza now offers great value as the favorite.
